OVERVIEW

This online instructor-led course prepares you for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) certification examination. Additional supplemental documents are provided complimentary to you for use in preparing for the ACSM-CEP certification exam.

The course includes key presentations and outlines, specialized examination documents, and 200+ practice test questions. ACSM-CEPs work with individuals that have medically controlled diseases and complete physical assessments and interpret the results. ACSM-CEPs also prescribe appropriate, personalized exercise programs for healthy individuals and those with health challenges to enhance the quality of life, improve health-related physical fitness and performance, manage health risks, and promote lasting, healthy behavior changes.

After completing the course and passing the ACSM-CEP certification exam, you will be prepared to work in one of the fastest-growing segments of the service industries. You will also be prepared to take your training to an advanced level by conducting and interpreting physical fitness assessments and developing exercise prescriptions for people who are healthy or have medically controlled diseases.

DETAILS

Fitness Internship:This course includes a fitness internship, where you practice your health, medical, and fitness setting skills to gain more real-world experiences. Because we can educate students globally, you can work with your instructor on selecting an internship site in the United States or internationally at health and fitness facilities and chains on an ongoing basis. Learn to work with fitness and health industry professionals for a hands-on experience working with members at fitness facilities and health centers. You intern for 60 total hours in this course.

How it works:

You will research and find sites of interest with the instructor’s help. The internship site coordinator and you will agree to an hourly/weekly schedule that accommodates everyone’s schedule. It is reviewed by the instructor and confirmed. The internship site coordinator tracks hours and completes an evaluation form at the end of the internship, confirming hours served and providing you an evaluation. During the internship, you will complete projects and evaluate the site as if you were a fitness/health manager and give the site a final grade for future reference.

  1. Health and Fitness Assessment
    1. Administer and interpret pre-participation health screening procedures to maximize client safety and minimize risk.
    2. Determine client’s readiness to participate in a health-related physical fitness assessment and exercise program.
    3. Determine and administer physical fitness assessments for apparently healthy clients and those with controlled disease.
  2. Exercise Prescription and Implementation
    1. Determine safe and effective exercise programs to achieve desired outcomes and goals, and translate assessment results into appropriate exercise prescriptions.
    2. Implement cardiorespiratory exercise prescriptions for apparently healthy clients and those with controlled disease based on current health status, fitness goals and availability of time.
    3. Implement exercise prescriptions for flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, balance, agility, and reaction time for apparently healthy clients and those with controlled disease based on current health status, fitness goals and availability of time.
  3. Exercise Counseling and Behavior Modification
    1. Optimize adoption and adherence of exercise and other healthy behaviors by applying effective communication techniques.
    2. Optimize adoption and adherence of exercise and other healthy behaviors by applying effective behavioral strategies and motivational techniques.
    3. Provide educational resources to support clients in the adoption and maintenance of healthy lifestyle behaviors.
  4. Risk Management and Professional Responsibilities
    1. Develop and disseminate risk management guidelines for a health/fitness facility to reduce member, employee, and business risk.
    2. Ensure that emergency policies and procedures are in place.
  5. Final Examination Preparation

Prerequisites:

There are no prerequisites to take this course. However, there are eligibility requirements to complete the ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist Certification.

INSTRUCTOR

Ken Baldwin, M.ED., ACSM-H/FI has been involved in the fitness, wellness, and education profession for over 10 years. He is the senior editor, content expert, and lead author for ACSM’s Resources for the Personal Trainer Textbook, Second Edition.” He was chair of IDEA’s National Personal Trainer Committee and chair of the Senior Fitness Subcommittee for the Massachusetts Governor’s Committee on Physical Fitness and Sports. He serves on national committees for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), AAHPERD, and the Medical Fitness Association. His background includes operating and managing a personal training company, consulting at corporations, and lecturing at international conferences, public events, national conventions.

How long does it take to complete this course?

After you register, you will receive 9 months to complete the course. The time allotted for completion has been calculated based on the number of course hours.
